Breast Cancer Rehab - What do we need to know?

-- Michelle Lyons --
After skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide – 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 1 in 36 will die from it. Treatment strategies are becoming much more effective, which means that more women are living longer, but having to deal with the after-effects of cancer and cancer treatment. What are those side effects? How do they manifest in the short, medium and long term? What do we need to know if we are working with women during and after breast cancer treatment? What’s the ‘best’ type of exercise and what should we avoid? Exercise has been shown to be a powerful ally to help counteract the side effects and reduce the risk of recurrence, so how can we help women live well and return to a high quality of life, taking into account the pelvic, orthopaedic, cardiovascular and cognitive effects of breast cancer treatment? We’ll discuss all of these questions and look at the evidence supporting breast cancer rehab in this PowerTalk with Michelle Lyons.

By attending this PowerTalk, attendees will
  • Learn how treatment strategies for breast cancer - surgery, chemo, radiation, hormonal therapies - affect women and how you can help them manage and move beyond these side effects - there’s more to breast cancer rehab than shoulder ROM!
  • Understand the short, medium & long term side effects of Chemotherapy (peripheral neuropathies, digestive function, cardiotoxicity, bone health, cognitive dysfunction, cancer related fatigue...) Radiation (progressive fibrosis, fatigue, shoulder issues...) or Hormonal therapies (Tamoxifen, Aromatase Inhibitors, muscle/joint issues, pelvic health, menopausal symptoms, sleep disruptions)
  • Recognise the red flags when working with Breast Cancer survivors – when to refer on.
