Iliotibial band pain in runners: Strategies for the treatment

In this PowerTalk, attendees will learn how to provide a comprehensive treatment approach for runners with iliotibial band pain. Emphasis will be placed on clinical reasoning as clinicians will learn risk factors, etiology, pathology, assessment, and management of runners with iliotibial band pain. Assessment techniques will include basic clinical gait analysis and physical examination. Treatment strategies will include treatment strategies in the acute phase through the return to run process. Clinicians will also learn strategies to reduce re-injury rates in runners.

Attendees will:
  1. learn the risk factors of iliotibial band pain in runners
  2. be able to recognize the clinical signs of iliotibial band pain in runners
  3. be able to identify the primary gait mechanics that place the greater load on the iliotibial band
  4. be able to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation program, including guiding a return to run program, in runners with iliotibial band pain
Docent: Rich Willy

Dr. Richard Willy is an Assistant Professor in the School of Physical Therapy, University of Montana (Missoula, MT, USA).  He received his PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science from the University of Delaware and his master of physical therapy from Ohio University. In addition to his research, Dr. Willy has been a clinician for 18 years specializing in the treatment of the injured runner. His research aims to develop clinically effective treatments for patellofemoral pain syndrome, Achilles tendon injuries and tibial stress fractures. Besides publishing in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Willy is a national and international presenter of his research and clinical expertise on how to evaluate and treat the injured runner. Dr. Willy and his research have been featured in Runner’s World multiple times. Dr. Willy treats runners of all levels, from the new runner to the elite competitor.
