C-section preparation and recovery

-- Melissa Dessaulles --

There is limited information and guidance surrounding cesarean birth leaving parents feeling unsure of how to prepare for and recover postpartum. Given that cesarean birth rates are rising it is important that practitioners be informed of evidence based tools and approaches to best support our cesarean birth clients.

Physiotherapists, rehab professionals and midwives have much to offer in terms of support and exercise guidance.

This PowerTalk will provide the attendee with an understanding of the anatomy behind a cesarean birth as well evidence based strategies and exercise to help clients navigate postpartum recovery.

Melissa Dessaulles is a registered physiotherapist with extensive post graduate training in the management and treatment of pelvic floor related symptoms and perinatal health. She has completed certification in the areas of pelvic floor rehabilitation, pre/ post natal care, urogynecology, orthopedics and neurology. Melissa is trained in using Real Time Ultrasound to assess the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, which is an effective tool at assessing and treating diastasis recti, core strength and pelvic dysfunction.

A graduate of the physiotherapy program from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006, Melissa has a special interest in the area of Women’s Health. It was her journey through pregnancy and postpartum recovery where she discovered the lack of awareness towards the pelvic floor, a socially “taboo” area of the body and the benefits physiotherapy can provide.

Melissa works out of Wave Physiotherapy in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. She is also the creator of Mommy Berries, an online platform designed to virtually guide women through pregnancy, birth preparation and postpartum recovery. She is the host of The Pelvic Floor Project podcast. You can find her on instagram @mommyberrieshealth.
